Local champion to lead major 10-year plan to improve Platt Bridge and Spring View
A respected local community champion has been appointed to lead a neighbourhood board that will oversee a £20 million programme of investment in Platt Bridge and Spring View over the next decade.
Lisa Aldred, who has lived in the area for many years and raised her family locally, has been named chair of the independent board responsible for driving forward the Pride in Place programme in the area.
The board, which will be made up of residents, businesses and representatives from the voluntary sector, will play a central role in shaping how the £20 million government-funded investment is used to improve opportunities, tackle local challenges and enhance the area over the next 10 years.
Lisa is chair of Platt Bridge Community Group and is actively involved with a range of local organisations, including Abram Communities Together, the Flood Action Group, St Nathaniel's Church and the Come and See Youth Group.
Working closely with local people, the board will gather views and ideas from across the community to help determine priorities and guide future investment decisions.
Lisa said: “I’m so proud to have been appointed to chair the independent neighbourhood board here in Platt Bridge and Spring View which is a community I care so deeply about.
Despite the challenges we face, this is a community with heart, resilience, and a strong sense of togetherness. Like many northern towns, Platt Bridge and Spring View can feel left behind at times, affecting opportunities and aspirations.
However, there is huge potential here. The opportunity that’s arisen through Pride in Place gives us the chance to address inequalities, improve opportunities for children and young people, and create a thriving, safe, and connected neighbourhood that people are proud of. I believe in this community and its future.”
Andy Burnham, MP for Makerfield and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, said: "I can't think of anyone better to lead this work than Lisa. She has spent years putting Platt Bridge and Spring View first – through her brilliant work at St Nathaniel's Church, bringing people together through community groups, and always stepping up when the community has needed her most.
I'll always remember what Lisa did during the devastating floods in 2025. She was at the heart of the response, helping families who had lost so much and rallying our community. That spoke to the true measure of her character and showed her unwavering commitment to making this community a better place, even in the face of devastation.
I'm looking forward to working alongside Lisa and the neighbourhood board as they help shape the next decade of investment in our towns.”
Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet member for neighbourhoods for Wigan Council, added: “We’re so pleased that Lisa is now in place and ready to drive the Pride in Place plan forward through its first year.
Local people know their places best and through Pride in Place, power is placed firmly in the hands of our communities. To have appointed Lisa is a really exciting milestone.”
